Tutorial: Handmade self-securing accordion greeting card

Right. After months of being MIA (I moved halfway across the world), time to get back to creating something again!

If you know someone like me who’s MIA a lot, why not send them a handmade card to tell them you miss them (or in this case, heart them)? Here’s how!

IMG_3041What you’ll need:

  • Cover:
    – 8.25″ x 4.75″ (height x width) card stock: 1 piece (let’s call this Big Cover)
    – 3.75″ x 4.25″ (h x w) card stock: 1 piece (Small Cover)
  • Inside cover (must be of different pattern/design from card stock above):
    – 3.25″ x 3.75″ (h x w) card stock: 2 pieces
  •  Paper (where you’ll write your message)
    – 11″ x 3.25″ (h x w) paper: 1 piece (up to you if you want it colored)
  • Craft knife
  • Glue
  • Rubber stamp (optional — Click here for tutorial!)

Step 1: Decorate the Small Cover by stamping or drawing your design in the middle.

Step 2: Draw a 1/8-inch border around it with a 1/4-inch “do-not-cut area” across the middle.

Step 4: Get the strip of paper where you’ll write your message and fold it into four, accordion style (zig zag).

Step 5: Glue the card stock and paper pieces. They are sized so there’s a 1/4″-inch difference around each piece. See illustration below.

Gluing

  • Glue one of the inside covers at the center of the Small Cover. MAKE SURE YOU DON’T GLUE THE FLAP BIT.
  • Glue the other inside cover at the center of the Big Cover.
  • Glue one side of the strip of paper to Inside Cover 1. Glue another side on Inside Cover 2.

Step 6: Close the accordion card and obviously the Big Cover will stick out at the top and bottom. Fold these with everything tucked inside. The reason I do it this way is because if I fold it in the exact same size as the Small Cover (3.75″ x 4.25″), it might not close properly. It needs a bit of breathing space.

But if you like to fold it before gluing the pieces together, this tutorial is sized so the Big Cover flaps are 2″ in height.

Step 7: Tuck the Big Cover flaps under the Small Cover mini flaps to close the card and hide your feelings away.
